Transportation from Rishikesh to Ukhimath is not included in the itinerary. Ukhimath is 6 hours by road from Haridwar. And transportation for the same can be arranged at additional costs.

Chopta Trek (Rudraprayag)


Chopta is a racy hamlet which is still unexplored by travelers. It is the commencement point of the trek to Tungnath- 3rd Kedar and further 1.5 km trek from Tungnath leads to Chandrashila(4000mts above sea level) which offers 360 panoramic view of snow clad Himalayan peaks including Nanda Devi, Trishul and Chaukhamba.

Chopta itself offers splendid views of the imposing Himalayan range including Trishul, Nanda Devi and Chaukhamba. It is located at an elevation of astonishing 2680mts above the sea level. Rich in varied flora and fauna, Chopta is situated amidst thick forest of pine, deodar and rhododendrons.

Chopta is easily accessible as it is located on the road connecting Gopeshwar with Guptkashi. Wake up with cool salubrious breeze and chirping of birds in Chopta which is a far cry from the blaring horns of the cities and other hill stations, morning view from Chopta is invigorating when the crimson rays of sun kisses the snow laden Himalayas.  Carry light woolens in summers and heavy woolens in winters while planning a visit to Chopta. Hotel in Chopta provides standard accommodation facilities at affordable prices.

Chopta, Tungnath and Chandrashila are covered with snow during winters. If you visit the place during Dec-Feb, you may witness snowfall and enjoy trekking in snow But the roads are occasionally blocked near Chopta in case of heavy snowfall.

About Chopta - Chandrashila Trek

The trek begins at Ukhimath (180 kms away from Rishikesh). This is an all-season trek with easy to moderate trekking tails making it a good bet for any beginner. The Chandrashila trek is known for its scenic beauty. It passes through some beautiful forests and affords excellent views of the snow peaks. The trek even gives you the opportunity to visit the 1000-year-old Tungnath temple, which is the highest shrine of Lord Shiva. It is one of the panch-kedars and is believed to have been built by Arjuna himself. Chandrashila Peak is famous for its breathtaking 360-degree view of the Himalayan ranges. It is one of the few peaks that can also be climbed in the winter.


We begin at Ukhimath and set on a trek to the Deoria Tal campsite. From Deoria Tal, next day, we set on a trek to Chopta village where we set camp at the meadows or by the stream. From Chopta, we hike to Tungnath temple and on the same climb to the summit of Tungnath - Chandrashila

Day 1 Chopta - Chandrashila Trek: Ukhimath (1310m) To Deoria Tal (2387m)

We begin our journey here with a visit to Ukhimath's famous Omkareshwar temple. After the temple visit, we set on an eastward trail through the town, up the hill to Deoria Tal (2387m). The 8 km trek takes us through rhodendrons, lush green surroundings and scenic views of the snow-capped mountains. Deoria Tal is a small lake with two tea shops around it.  The views of the mountain ranges from here are fabulous. A cup of tea by the lake is bliss by all means.

Day 2 Chopta - Chandrashila Trek: Deoria Tal - Chopta Village (2600m)

After breakfast, we set on a trail through through some beautiful forest and meadows to the unspoiled beauty of Chopta village. Expect your trails to be sheathed with snow, if it's winter. There are two camping options, either camp short of Chopta near a steam, or at the meadows. During winters, Chopta resembles no less than a mini-Switzerland.

Day 3 Chopta - Chandrashila Trek: Hike to Tungnath Temple (3400m) & Chandrashila (3925m)

Post Breakfast, we leave behind the amazing views at Chopta for more magical ones and take the steady uphill path to Tungnath temple. Tungnath is a short 3 km trek from Chopta. The temple is only visible in the last few hundred metres. From the temple, we head up to Chandrashila peak - the summit of Tungnath. Enjoy the beautiful 360-degree views, before heading down Chopta again and finally to Duggalbitta where we set up camp.

Day 4 Chopta - Chandrashila Trek: Drive to Kaudiyala Campsite

Today we'll leave on a 7 hour drive to Kaudiyala. We reach Kaudiyala by evening and set up camp.

Day 5 Chopta - Chandrashila Trek: White Water Rafting from Kaudiyala to Rishikesh

After breakfast, we indulge in a rafting session on the river Ganga. The stretch takes us through some challenging rapids from Kaudiyala to Rishikesh - where our journey ends.
