Uttarakhand: Trek to Mystery Lake Roopkund

Roopkund (Skeleton Lake) is a glacial lake in Uttarakhand state of India famous due to more than five hundred human skeletons found at the edge of a lake. This lake is also called Mystry Lake. The location is uninhabited and is located in Himalaya at an altitude of about 5,029 meters (16,499 feet). A small glacial lake in the lap of Jurighati Dhar is the culmination point of annual Nanda Raj Jat. During the festival people from the villages bring their presiding deity to Roop Kund. Places on the way of this tour are Rishikesh, Lohajung, Didana, Ali Bugyal, Bedni Bugyal, Bhaguabasa, Bhuna, Sitel, Rudrprayag.

Roopkund trek is one of our favorite treks. The Roopkund trek is also popular because of the several climbing objectives in this area which include the beautiful trident peak Trishul (7122m) and Ronti (6078m). At a height of 5229m Roopkund is also called Mystery Lake because of the unusual remains of humans and horse bones around it. The route of the Roopkund trek passes through delightful alpine pastures and snowfields and offers magnificent views of peaks such as Trishul, Ronti, Nanda Ghunti, Chaukhamba among others. It is also the same route thatís taken in the famous Raj Jat Yatra thatís held once in 12 years.

About Roopkund Trek

Roopkund (4800 m) is situated in Chamoli district of Garhwal and known for its beauty as much as its mystery. "Mystery' has been associated with Roopkund due to the human skeletons and remains of horses found here which are said to be belonging to circa 850 AD. Only recently the reason has been indicated as a major hailstorm. But nonetheless, the lake still exudes its sinister vibes mixed with a tang of beauty. The Roopkund trail is a moderate type trek route, taking us through oak forests, lush green lands and clear water streams, to high-altitude meadows of Bedni Bugyal with views of Himalayan giants like Trishul (7120m) & Nanda Ghunti (6310m).\
